The story began with a nearly 400-year-old bell owned by the Reformed Church, for which a new placement was required on the site of the prayer house in Băile Tușnad.

The characteristics of the site – the significant level difference and the mature vegetation – generated both constraints and opportunities within the design process. A key objective was the avoidance of an excessive volumetric dominance: the sober and restrained image of the prayer house was not to be subordinated to a tall, ostentatious bell tower, but rather complemented by a structure with a tempered architectural expression, integrated into the landscape while remaining perceptible from the street.

Ultimately, the bell found protection within the “arms” of five pine trees. The bell tower provides not only functional shelter, but also symbolic protection, representing the small community of Băile Tușnad. On a secondary level of meaning, the five pines symbolize the Reformed Church, which safeguarded and preserved the bell for nearly four centuries.
